5 days of husky adventure in Finnish Lapland

Our five-day husky tour in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is designed for nature-loving, physically fit participants who want to experience Lapland in an authentic and quiet way – without noise, and without the presence of snowmobiles.

In a small group of no more than six people, you will drive your own sled dog team for four days through the breathtaking fell landscape. The tour requires endurance, focus, and a sense of balance – you’ll support the dogs uphill and stay steady on descents. The pace is set by the terrain and the conditions, not by the clock.

Each night is spent at our simple, wood-heated wilderness camp "Madejärvi", located at the edge of the national park. With no electricity or running water, the camp offers a basic, yet meaningful experience – one that brings your attention back to what truly matters.

This journey calls for active participation: a willingness to help with daily tasks, to embrace a simpler lifestyle, and to be part of a respectful team – both with fellow guests and with our dogs.

Travel Season – Lapland in the Rhythm of Winter

Our season runs from December to April – a time when the nature of Lapland transforms again and again. Each phase of winter has its own unique atmosphere and special light, which will shape your experience in a lasting way.

December to mid-January – The Silence of the Polar Night
This period, known as Kaamos, is a quiet and almost magical time. The sun stays below the horizon, yet it’s far from dark: snow-covered landscapes glow in soft twilight. The sky is painted in shades of blue and pink, and with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights dance above you in the clear night sky.

Late January to February – The Return of the Light
Slowly, the sun begins to rise again. With each passing day, the hours grow brighter, the light becomes clearer, and the contrasts sharper. The silence remains, but the days gain a new energy. If you’re drawn to the returning light, this is the perfect time to experience the balance between deep winter stillness and fresh momentum.

March to mid-April – Long Days, Wide Horizons
Spring in Lapland opens up the landscape. Days grow noticeably longer, and the sun gains strength. Snow begins to melt from the trees – helped by stronger winds and daytime thaw – revealing more open views through the forest. The horizon stretches across the fells, and although the nights are shorter, the Northern Lights are still possible and often striking under clear skies.

Our Huskies - Part of the Team, Not Just Part of the Tour

We live and work with our 45 Alaskan Huskies in the heart of Lapland – and we’re proud of each one of them. They are a part of our daily life and the heart of every tour. Each dog has a name, a unique character, and a personality that you’ll get to know throughout the week.

Alaskan Huskies are the most widely used sled dog breed in the world – not because of how they look, but because of what’s inside: endurance, teamwork, adaptability, and a clear love for running. They’ve been specifically bred for working in dog sledding.

During your time with us, you’ll grow together with your dog team. Our husky tours don’t end when you step off the sled. Even afterwards, respectful interaction remains essential: the dogs move freely and choose whether they want to come close or keep their distance. You’ll notice – trust is never automatic; it’s something that develops over time.

Caring for the dogs is also part of the week: feeding, basic care, and small daily routines. Not as a duty, but as a chance to connect – with your four-legged partners who make this journey possible.

What We Expect from You

This journey is designed for people who are ready to actively participate – on the sled and in the camp. No prior experience with sled dogs is required, but a solid level of basic fitness, curiosity for new experiences, and the willingness to embrace a nature-focused week are essential. There is no electricity or running water.

You should enjoy spending time outdoors, even in freezing temperatures, and be open to taking responsibility for a dog team.

Our husky tour is not just about riding – it's about experiencing nature together, offering a true hands-on experience. This also includes camp life: chopping wood, fetching water, preparing the sauna, washing dishes, and taking care of the dogs.

We are looking for participants who engage respectfully – with the group, the daily routines, and in handling our dogs. There will be plenty of time to enjoy – whether it’s warming up in the wood-heated sauna, sitting by the crackling fire in the kota, or perhaps even taking on a new challenge, like a dip in the ice hole after the sauna.

You can join if you are 16 years or older.

Accommodation

Throughout the week, you will stay at our Wilderness Camp "Madejärvi." It is located right by the lake of the same name, on the edge of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Every day tour begins and ends here – the camp is not only our base but also the place where we live, eat and have sauna.

"Madejärvi" is a typical self-sufficient wilderness camp – without running water, without electricity, but with a thoughtful system, a lot of atmosphere, and everything you really need.

The heart of the camp is the spacious Kota with an open fire in the center. This is where we eat together. Meals are cooked on-site – traditional Finnish dishes with ingredients that we often process ourselves: moose meat, berries, homemade jams.

Accommodation is in the large log cabin, which offers space for the entire group on two levels. The cabin is heated with a large soapstone stove and an additional self-sufficient oil heater – so it remains comfortably warm even on frosty days. A small battery provides light and a USB charging option, for example, for phones or power banks. Classic electrical outlets are not available.

The toilet is a separate dry toilet.

The sauna building is located directly by the lake and is heated every day. We fetch water for the large kettle in the sauna from the frozen lake, which serves both as a shower and a source of warm water. For those who dare, there’s a chance for a quick dip in the ice hole after the sauna – an experience you won’t forget.

Weekly Program (detailed)

Sunday: Arrival
Transfers from Kittilä Airport or a hotel in Levi are available from 14:00. Transfers are only available for flights arriving before 20:00. Meet the group and enjoy dinner together.

Monday: Clothing, safety instruction and first Husky Tour
After breakfast, we take a short transfer from our Wilderness Camp Madejärvi to the Husky Farm. Here, you will be equipped with the necessary winter gear: insulated jacket and pants, warm boots, gloves, and a hat.

Next, you'll receive a thorough introduction to handling the sled and the dogs. Your dog team will already be waiting, full of energy and excitement. With loud barking, they get ready for the first leg of our journey through the snowy moor and forest landscapes.

We’ll take a break along the way by an open fire, where hot drinks and sausages on sticks will be served.

The goal of the tour is the familiar Wilderness Camp Madejärvi. Once back at camp, the dogs will be unhitched, and we’ll enjoy some free-run time together.

To warm up, we’ll serve hot soup, tea, and coffee in our Kota. Later, we’ll heat up the sauna, and in the evening, we gather around the open fire in the kota for the dinner and a relaxing end to the first tour day.

Tuesday to Thursday: Husky Tours in Pallas National Park
Today, you’ll learn how to properly harness the dogs and attach them up to the sled – an essential routine that will become more familiar each day. Each day takes us on a different route through the vast landscape of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park – sometimes through dense forests, sometimes over open moorlands, with new highlights: a distant view, special light conditions, or a particularly well-coordinated team spirit.

We’ll stop for lunch by a fire, where we’ll enjoy hot drinks, sausages on sticks, and sandwiches.

In the afternoon, we’ll return to our camp by the lake. The dogs will be taken care of  and fed. Afterward, we head to the sauna, and in the evening, we gather in the kota for a freshly cooked traditional Finnish dinner.

On Thursday, the last leg of the tour ends at the Husky Farm in Rauhala. Here, we’ll say goodbye to the dogs, who now get their well-deserved rest. After returning the gear, a short transfer takes you back to the Wilderness Camp. In the sauna or later during the dinner by the fire, there’s time to reflect on the week – the special moments, the challenges, and the bond with the dogs.

Friday: Departure
Breakfast and transfer to the airport or hotel in Levi.
